Many individuals were diagnosed & treated for ADHD in childhood or adolescence need transition to adult care. Others dropped out of treatment as adolescents and now realize they require ongoing treatment. However, there remains a large group of people who were never diagnosed in childhood and now seeking treatment for the first time as adults.
Every patient will be scheduled for an initial psychiatric/neuropsychological assessment with Dr. Fazekas for 60 to 90 minutes in order to determine an individualized treatment plan which may include prescribing of medication (s).
Medication management will be more frequent in the beginning until the correct medication and dose is established. Afterwards, medication only follow up visits may occur at 60 day intervals. Medication monitoring may be accomplished in person or via the convenience of telemedicine on a secure website at scheduled times.
Medications can be very helpful for many patients in managing primary symptoms of ADHD and improve focusing, impulse control & hyperactivity. However, they may still have difficulties with “executive functions” like planning, organization, studying, time management, social judgment, working memory, self-regulation, etc. Dr. Fazekas can further assess these problem areas and provide individualized treatment including workbook type assignments to improve these higher order cognitive abilities.
Many patients diagnosed with ADHD also struggle with anxiety disorders, depression, and sleep difficulties. These areas will also be addressed and may require additional treatment including counseling/psychotherapy and other medications (antianxiety, antidepressant, etc.). Dr. Fazekas will provide these services if needed and requested.
Some patients may have suspected learning problems or other cognitive related disorders for which he can offer neuropsychological testing to specify and confirm any such disabilities. This information would be most useful for college exam and classroom accommodations. As a graduate school faculty member, he is well aware of the complexities of navigating the education system required by students.
THE DIAGNOSTIC MEASUREMENT SCALES, TREATMENT GUIDELINES, & WORKSHEETS UTILIZED IN DR. FAZEKAS’ PRACTICE WERE DEVELOPED BY THE CLINICAL & RESEARCH PROGRAM IN ADULT ADHD AT MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL & HARVARD MEDICAL SCHOOL.
